As a Consultant Orthodontist with over 20 years of experience in Dhaka, one of the questions I hear most from parents is: "When should my child get braces?"
First Evaluation: Age 7
The recommended age for a child's first orthodontic evaluation is age 7. By this age, enough permanent teeth have erupted for a specialist to identify potential problems with jaw growth, spacing, and bite alignment. Early detection prevents complex, expensive treatment later.
Age-by-Age Breakdown
Ages 7–10: Early Intervention
Treatment at this age uses removable or functional appliances to guide jaw growth. Best for crossbites, severe crowding, thumb-sucking damage, and protruding front teeth at risk of injury.
Ages 10–14: The Sweet Spot
The most common and ideal age for braces. Most permanent teeth have erupted and the jaw is still growing, enabling faster tooth movement (12–18 months), shorter treatment, and the best results.
Ages 15–18: Teen Orthodontics
Teens achieve excellent results. Clear aligners are popular for older teens wanting a less visible option.
Adults (18+): Never Too Late
No upper age limit exists. At our clinic in Lalmatia, Dhaka, we treat adults in their 30s–50s with ceramic braces and clear aligners.
Warning Signs Your Child Needs an Evaluation
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing or snoring
- Thumb-sucking past age 5
- Jaws that shift or make sounds
"A simple check-up at age 7 can save your child from years of discomfort and much higher treatment costs later. Don't wait for all permanent teeth — bring your child early."
